Sarah Hurst and Ellen L House
Recently I have been trying to resolve a DNA match on Ancestry.
I could not find the link which led me to building a disassociated or orphaned branch.
In the course of so doing I came across a number of similar trees, sharing a lot of surnames, but still no link to my thee. The orphaned twigs and branches were becoming more like a severed bough.
I explored some of the recurring surnames, such as Kimber, Griffiths, Ellis, and Gibbs to name a few. Kimber was looking good for awhile, but they were from separate counties.
The revelation started with Ellen Louisa House / Ellen Louise House.
This is the story about the link which joined the bough to the tree.
I should point out that this is not the universally held version of the truth of this family. Other trees have different associations, and I am not saying that those are wrong. William Edward Humby 1831-1906 and Sarah Whetron 1831-1908 for instance. However, this version does help resolve the DNA matches.
Some of the twigs did become linked but the resultant Ancestry Trace and relationship was nowhere near the DNA predicted relationship, so there must be a shorter, less convoluted route between links yet to be found.
Whilst the pivot was Ellen Louisa House / Ellen Louise House I will start with;
Matthew and Sarah Humby. harrisgraham142 originally shared this on 7 May 2016 on Ancestry
Sarah Hurst
1853–1934
Birth 1853 • Millbrook, Hampshire, England
Death 2 MAR 1934 • Redbridge Hill, Millbrook, Southampton, Hampshire, England
My great-grandaunt
Sarah gave birth to a baby boy before she was married.
1875 | Henry James | Stephen | Gibbs | Maybush | Labourer | C Apthorp |
August 29th | & | Wheelwright | ||||
No. 455 | Sarah | Hurst | Curate |
The curate may have been Charles Apthorp Wheelwright who may be related to a person of the same name mentioned in this article about Apthorp Villa.
Sometimes baptism records have annotations indicating baseborn or illegitimate, but in this case it is just inferred.
The father is recorded as Stephen Gibbs, a labourer, and the mother Sarah Hurst. They lived at Maybush, Millbrook, now a suburb of Southampton. Millbrook became part of Southampton in 1895 when Shirley and Freemantle were also absorbed into the borough.
Henry Hurst appears in the 1881 census as the step son of Mathew Humby, aged 5. The date of the 1881 census was 3 April 1881. The calculation between his baptism date of 29th August 1875 and the 1881 census date results in an age of 5 years, 7 months, 6 days including the end date. Although the baptism date is not a firm indication of date of birth year, it seems reasonable to conclude that this is the same person as Henry James Hurst, the son of Stephen Gibbs and Sarah Hurst above.
Mathew Humby and Sarah Humby indicate to the census enumerator that they are married, and that they have a one year old daughter named Florence Humby, born in Millbrook.
The address of the family is Romsey Road, which is a long road in the parish of Millbrook, including going through Maybush and Shirley. The family lived five properties away from Baytree Cottage, and four away from the Old Thach House, in the other direction, by reference to the census papers. Along from Baytree Cottage we find Rose Cottage, which I have previously located on 'The Parish of Millbrook Tithe Apportionment'.
OS 25" Map Romsey Road Old Shirley Humby Family -- Hampshire and Isle of Wight LXV.1 Revised: 1895, Published: 1897
From the 1881 census information I believe the family lived in the vicinity of the green circle applied to the old Ordinance Survey 25" Map. This location is not inconsistent with the Maybush location of Henry James Hurst's baptism 5 years earlier.
The Blacksmiths Arms (P.H.) shown on the map is not a re-named Old Thatched House but the building on the other side of the junction of Old Shirley Hill and Romsey Road. The Old Thatched House is the Beer House marked B.H, on the map, with the indicator of a level Bench Mark on the front of the building.

Sarah Hurst Baptism
Baptisms solemnized in the Parish of Millbrook 1852, Dec 25th, Sarah D (daughter) Obadiah & Elizabeth Hurst, Wimpson, Labourer, by Thomas Burmingham, Curate.
Sarah Hurst Census 1861
Millbrook, Sarah Hurst, Dau (Daughter) of Robert Hurst, an Agriculture Labourer, and presumably his wife, Elizabeth Hurst. She is recorded as aged 8, a scholar, born in Millbrook, Hants.
One of four children recorded in the census.
There is no place stated, but it is between Wimpson Farm and Mousehole. Currently, that equates to the roads, Mansel Road East, and Oakley Road.
Sarah Hurst Census 1871
Green Lane Millbrook. Sarah Hurst, an unmarried Servant to Elizabeth Mongston. Aged 18, a General Serv. born in Hants, Millbrook.
Whilst this record has not got the associated family to help establish it is for the correct person, it does have corroborating evidence of name, age, and place of birth. Together with an occupation that suggests away from home at the time of the Enumerators visit.
Matthew Humby
Matthew Humby Baptism
Baptisms solemnized in the Parish of East and West Wellow 1855, April 22, Matthew son of William Edward & Sarah Hunby, West Wellow, Labourer, by W.H. Empton
Matthew Humby Census 1861
The 1861 Census would probably have been his first, given a baptism date of 22 April 1855, and assuming a similar birth year.
Coxford, Millbrook, Matthew Humby, Son of William Humby, and presumably his wife, Sarah. He is recorded as aged 6, a scholar, born in Wilts, Wellow.
The parish of Wellow was part in Wiltshire, and part in Hampshire.
According to Wikipedia, Some people refer to the two villages of East Wellow and West Wellow individually, while others refer to them collectively as Wellow. There is no official administrative or political division which separates the two parts, and they share the same parish council, which also covers the small settlement of Canada. Until 1895 when the county boundary was realigned, West Wellow was in Wiltshire and East Wellow in Hampshire.
Matthew Humby Census 1871
Census for Millbrook in 1871
No 1 Rose Hill Cottages, near Rose Cottage and Sommerset House.
Mathew Humby, son of Edward Humby and presumably his wife, Sarah. He is recorded as aged 16, born in West Wellow, Wilts.
From 1861, William Humby aged 27, a Labourer, and from 1871, Edward Hunby, aged 39, a gardener, are both probably William Edward Humby, born 1831. Taking account the vagaries of Census information, particularly with respect to age, these records are reasonably consistent.
