Starting Ancestry Synopsis;
Abraham Hurst was born in 1735 in Houghton, Hampshire. He was married three times and had two sons and one daughter. He died in 1794 in Broughton, Hampshire, at the age of 59.
The three marriages are questionable with one being "First Wife" due to him being a widower when he married Martha May. Another wife is Catharine Edward as there are a number of Ancestry Trees suggesting her as a wife.
It is entirely feasible that there are two Abraham Hurst in the same area, and the one that married Martha May had a first wife other than Catharine Edward. Another option, is that he deserted Catharine Edward, lied about being a Widower, and then married Martha May illegally. There is a Last Will and Testament which refers to three children, Matha, Elizabeth, and Abraham.
This will attempt to add some clarity.
Introduction - Explanation
Discovery
I have decided to split the information about this person into two main sections. The first is discovery. Generally the first discovery is from Ancestry Trees and Hints. For the avoidance of repetition, I will not repeat that in the Discovery section for each person. Sometimes the lead maybe from MyHeritage, or other similar genealogy sites. Where that is the case, I will state so. Another lead could be DNA, including Ancestry's ThroughLines, again to be stated.
However, the main point of the discovery section is to create something of a story for the person and his or her life. A brief synopsis, sometimes over and above that created by Ancestry's AI.
Data Sheet
The next part is the Data Sheet. Designed to be the collection of all the records, and information found about the person. It can include records already shown in the Discovery Section, for completeness of the Data Sheet. However, although the template is structured for lots of possible information, I am sure that there will be times when there will be many gaps, which will be left so, just in case more information comes to light at a later time.
Structure
The structure of the family website is multifaceted. It depends of where you come into the site as to how transparent this is. The most simple page is that of a single person. More complicated is a single family, where there is a father and the articles within for associated people such as wife and children. The next level is multi-generation built around a hub, Articles within articles, generation after generation. With time it slowly grows. Each person within the growing mass, has a single focused article with a similar structure. This method, I think, gives structure to the reader, and to me.

Discovery
This discovery starts with his entry on my Family Tree in Ancestry.
Having explored Abraham Hurst the innkeeper from Andover in should be easier to limit cross information. The two families are in close proximity.
Also explored Abraham Hurst of Broughton, and his wife Catherine Hurst nee ????, together with Richard Emmet and his wife Elizabeth Emmet nee Hurst.
The next one was Abraham and Sarah Hurst of Broughton, a separate family to that of Abraham and Catherine Hurst
This one is following the discovery of a marriage record for an Abraham Hurst of Lockerly [Lockerley] and Sarah Brown, of Broughton.
Records of Anglican baptism. The system of registration was established in 1538 by Thomas Cromwell, Lord Privy Seal to Henry VIII and Chief Secretary to the King. From this date, clergy were given the responsibility of registering baptisms, marriages and burials in a book secured in the parish chest. In 1598 an order was issued for all entries to be entered on parchment and all previous entries to be copied from paper onto parchment. Therefore any pre-1598 registers are probably not the original. Some parchment registers were started from the accession to the Crown of Elizabeth I in 1558.

I did a page turn of the Marriage Register images looking for any entries with the surname Hurst, together with other familiar names, aided by the HGS Baptism Index shown below. This is part of the process of trying to establish another Abraham Hurst's family. By seeing families in the Baptism Register can help eliminate alternative options for residents in Broughton, Hampshire, of the Church of England. Obliviously this method excludes families without children. It also does not take into account other variables such as change of location.

Looking through the register there are a lot of babies privately baptised because they are weak or sick who are taken into the "Congregation of Xt's Flock", "Congregation of Christ's Flock", or "buried on", all in the same entry.
There are a number of recognisable family names within the early pages, which may or maynot be related, but it is not until 1751 that I came across a Hurst. That was the marriage of Richard Emmet and Elizabeth Hurst on 7th September 1751. On 27th October of the same year Richard, the son of Richard & Eliz Emmet was baptised. I think she might have been showing when she walked down the isle. These seem to be small communities where at least the vicar knows every bodies business, an I suspect a good few more people as well.
There are two Abraham Hurst entries in this Register, but only the first is his baptism.

Three years later, Abraham Hurst has survived any initial difficulties and is confirmed into the Congregation of Broughton Parish Church

Abraham Son of Abraham & Catherine Hearst received into the congregation and Elizabeth daughter of the said Abraham & Cathering Hearst publicly baptised July 1st [1759].
Abraham previously privately baptised November 6th 1756.
Could this be the same Abraham Hurst who married Sarah Pragnell in Houghton.
Octbr 16th [1780] Abraham Hurst, of the Parish of Broughton, and Sarah Pragnell of this Parish [Married by Banns]
From: Saturday, 6 November 1756, to: Monday, 16 October 1780, is 23 years, 11 months, 10 days excluding the end date. This is not necessarily his age, as the start date is his baptism, but it is unlikely to be far off his age. It is not an unreasonable age to get married. Generation and location don't suggest that this is not the person who married Sarah Pragnell.
In 1780, the minimum legal age for marriage was 12 years for women and 14 years for men. It was also possible for the couple to get engaged at the age of 7, with the right to break off the engagement on reaching the minimum age of consent. However, early marriages were rather rare, and the average age of the newlyweds was about 25 years.

Houghton Register Book beginning in the year of our Lord 1714 and ending in 1738.
The search of the Houghton Register is for both the surnames of Hurst and Emmet.
Unfortunately, the first pass of reading this register, which I admit was difficult in parts, revealed no entries in Baptisms, Marriages, or Burials with the surnames of Hurst or Emmet.
I would note that within this registry, burials started to be annotated with the affidavit about being buried in wool.
The Burying in Woollen Acts
The Register of the Parish of the Church of Thorncombe.
One example of many.
The first, well actually the second page of the register is headed;
A Register of those that have been buried in Woollen according to ?? ??? Act of Parliament Thorncombe 1680.
The primary thing to note here is that the book is indeed in relation to Thorncombe and that there is no reference to it being any other form of church, so presumably the Established Church.
The other thing of particular interest was the 'buried in Woollen according to Act of Parliament.' I had not come across this before so had to look it up. Wikipedia quickly provided an answer.
The Burying in Woollen Acts 1666–80 w
ere Acts of the Parliament of England (Cha. II c. 4 (1666), Cha. II c. 3 (1678) and Cha. II c. 1 (1680) ) which required the dead, except plague victims and the destitute, to be buried in pure English woollen shrouds to the exclusion of any foreign textiles.
Enforcement
It was a requirement that an affidavit be sworn in front of a Justice of the Peace (usually by a relative of the deceased), confirming burial in wool, with the punishment of a £5 fee for noncompliance. Burial entries in parish registers were marked with the word "affidavit" or its equivalent to confirm that affidavit had been sworn; it would be marked "naked" for those too poor to afford the woollen shroud.
The legislation was in force until 1814, but was generally ignored after 1770. The 1666 Act was repealed by the Statute Law Revision Act 1863.
The next interesting title page was at the beginning of the baptisms. It was a very smudged copy so I have tried to clean it up a little, without losing any of the original writing, however it is still difficult to decipher in the whole.
However, again it confirms that the book pertains to Thorncombe and seems to commence in 1663.
'A time to be born and a time to die' is one of the lines on the page.
It is difficult to make things out on the page, but it is nearly 4 centuries old. The Mayflower sailed to America in 1620 and the monarchy had been restored in 1660 with Charles II on the throne.
Turning to the next page of the scan, there are baptisms records, in Latin commencing in 15?? followed by 1552.

Just about to stop for the night, and look what I found.
Married at Houghton Parish Church;
Octbr 16th [1780] Abraham Hurst, of the Parish of Broughton, and Sarah Pragnell of this Parish [Married by Banns]
Not only is it a Hurst, but I recognize the names from my Family Tree, with DNA matches via them. Also, could this be the same Abraham Hurst, in the brought forward transcription below.
Novy 6th [1756] Abraham the Son of Abm [Abraham] & Catherine Hearst [Hurst] privately Bapd [Baptised]
This Abraham Hearst [Hurst] was probably poorly at birth as he was privately Baptised and it was on a Saturday, so probably not long after his birth.
The interval between his baptism and his weeding, if it is the same person is 23 years, 11 months. This is not inconceivable.
Also above, in the burials in the Parish of Broughton;
Feb 3 [1799] Abraham, son of Abraham Hurst buried.
If Abraham the son is the same person as baptised on 6th Nov 1756, his age would be about 42 years, 3 months Perhaps unusual to have your father mentioned at your burial, when you are so much an adult.
An alternative interpretation is that Abraham the father is the same person as baptised on 6th Nov 1756, his age would be about 42 years, 3 months Time to look for some more baptisms.

The 26th year of the Reign of King George II was 1753. An Act for the better Preventing of Clandestine Marriages led to the publication of proforma Register books such as this one, dated 1774.
The book was bought on Apr: 6th 1754. R Hinckesman Rector -- Will Holmes and John Munday, Church Wardens -- Price 8s - 0.
In 2021, the relative value of £0 8s 0d from 1754 ranges from £64.57 to £8,979.00. Even the previous parchment books might have cost less than that. Not surprising they continued with the old way, possibly hoping that this new way would die a death
The first entry in the Parish of Houghton was 1755. Apparently they continued with the old Parish registers as well, as evidenced above with an entry for 1780, together with the new format below.

Presumably, The Roger baptised on the same day in 1753 had died before 1757.

Earlier in the Register, an entry such as this would have been annotated, "a Bastard" or less frequently "Base Born".
Richard Hurst is a new name to this article. Richard is probably from the Parish as some entries have the addition of "Stranger".
Jany 7 [1765] Richd Son of Jos & Mary Hurst., which I interpret as Richard Son of Joseph & Mary Hurst. Another new family.
I have turned all the pages of this Andover Parish Register up to 1770, and the above, together with the ones allocated to children below, are the only entries with a surname Hurst. This has only been one pass so I might have missed a Hurst entry. However, the person named Elizabeth Hurst in the will, is still elusive, so instead of re-scanning this register, I will move to an earlier one.

I consider 1714 to be outside the probable range for finding the Baptism of Elizabeth Hurst, os in this case it was not a page turn but I used FamilySearch to find a possible date, and then navigated to that year.
Continuing with the hypothesis that Abraham Hurst married Rebeckah Thredgold, that was in 1744, so the probable date of birth for Elizabeth starts from 1745, and ends in 1754 when Abraham married Martha May, as a Widower.

I think this completes the list of people mentioned in the Will. Two children with Rebeckah Hurst nee Thredgold and one with Martha Hurst nee May. Also, no other Abraham Hurst active in the Register on Baptisms for the Parish of Andover at the relevant time.

Broughton is 10 to 11 miles, about 4hrs walking, away from Andover depending on which route taken, and is less than 3 miles from Houghton, only 1 hour walking. Unfortunately Google Maps does not yet have an option for riding a horse or horse and carriage, but somewhat quicker that walking

The entry for the baptism of Sarah Hurst 1781 referred to Abraham and Sarah Hurst of Buckholt. Sometimes that would refer to a place and other-times a Farm. There are not a lot of building in the area of Buckholt and no apparent hamlet or village so it could easily be referring to Buckholt Farm.
