Hurst families in North West Hampshire

Hurst families in North West Hampshire

Initially looking at the surnames of Hurst, including variation Hearst and Hirst, as part of my One Name Study of Hurst.

Using Hampshire Genealogical Society Indexes of Baptism, Mariages, and Burial records I will try to identify the extent of this task. How many Hurst surnames are there in Hampshire and what is the distribution both in the location and time.

The records are input into my TNG database and the information is displayed below in the form of reports, according to area / parish.

The settings for the below reports are; Tree, Hurst One Name Study, Last Name, Hurst, Hearst, or Hirst, with Place as shown in the report title.

The place search is inclusive, so for Andover for instance it will include 'Andover', 'Andover Parish', '????, Andover, Hampshire', and '????, nr. Andover', in fact anything that contains 'Andover'. In the case of Alton for instance, it will include Alton in Staffordshire as in my opinion it is better to know about some possibly misplaced data and discount it than not even know about the potential.

The reports are real time dynamic, with perhaps a page refresh this side.

Click on a name or place to get more information about them. You can also enter the full database by using the Home button in the blue section at the top of the report. Don't worry about returning to the report, just refresh the page on this side and it will revert to normal.

The reports are sorted into first name order. The same person can appear in the report numerous times based on the number of events associated with that person.

For instance, residence. I have made an assumption that in the early years of the data, that parent(s) reside in the parish that their child was baptised in, This is a way of ensuring that the parent appears in the report as both their baptism and marriage, may be before those records were kept, or are available. Four children baptised would result in four residence events, on the date of the baptism.

Unless otherwise stated I have assumed that baptism is soon after birth.

Tithe Apportionment Updates

Dec 2025 Jan 2026

Not updates on the Tithes, but on what I do with them and the process I use.

I have recently completed the Nursling Tithe Apportionment spreadsheet and used the data to create an ESRI Story Map as part of the Nursling One Place Study.

The spreadsheet used to record the data needed reworking as the Agreement had Leese and Lessor in addition to Landowner and Occupier.

All the previous Tithe Apportionment spreadsheets were built on the previous, apart from the first one obviously, Similar but different.

I though I had enough examples to make it worth creating a Template from the Nursling Tithe Apportionment spreadsheet.

Which I have done.

I am now reworking all the previous Tithe Apportionment parish spreadsheets to fit the template. Hopefully, I wont have to change the structure of the template to accommodate the earlier data. If I do have to, I will have to repeat the cycle of reworking until, it all fits harmoniously.

The idea is still to keep the spreadsheets as separate entities, and datasets, but to use Excel Power Query and Data Manager, to absorb all of the data into a single dataset from which all information can be compared and filtered, all within the same system and schema.

One Drive has been reconfigured accordingly, together with the concept as pulling together Census data and Parish Register data, such as baptisms. The later two are in early stages of development so there will be more about that here later.

The first Tithe Apportionment spreadsheet being remastered is Millbrook. It is not a short process.

Update from Joomla 3.10 to Joomla 4

This is the equivalent to major heart surgery.

There have been a lot of behind the scene changes, some of which have impacted what you can see and how you see it.

I have been chasing down those changes since the upgrade.

Please feel free to contact me if you find one of the remaining glitches.
