Frederick Jack Page known as John Wright is the father of Anthony James Carr. and 2 other boys.
John Wright was reared by the poor law system and the church. He was already married to another ,using his birth name so when he married Hannah he used John Wright.
All 3 of their boys used Wright as their birth name.
He stepped out of their lives when they were very young. and married again.

He had a sister who came to live in NZ.

The detail of name confusion; No1 son was bought up by his Grand parents on his Mothers side and took their surname Lamb .No 2 son used Wright, No3 son ( Anthony James ,used Wright until his early 20s and changed to Carr when he came to NZ.

I note from the 1939 register that the Writes lived next door to a Carr, but apparently, the name change to Carr had nothing to do with the neighbours ,but a 'father figure' who featured in his life at sea.

So it would seem that not only was Fredrick Jack Page using two names, he married three times.

Firstly, our person of interest is not to be confused with a similar family based In the vicinity of the East India Docks, in the Parish of All Hallows, Bromley, Middlesex. In the area of Poplar, London. Lots of similarities, but not the same.

Our person of interest the third of four children of Edwin / Edward Page and Florence Gertrude Page, nee Lockwood. Edwin Page had married Florence Lockwood in Q2 1901 at Fulham.

Alice Blanche Page was baptised on May 8^th, 1904 at St. Andrew's Church, Fulham by Charles E Curzon, to parents Edwin & Florence Gertrude Page of 63 Dieppe Street. His occupation is stated as Traveller. She was born March 6^th 1904.

The eldest child started infants school.

On 17^th Sept 1907 Page Edward Leonard joined the Langford Road Infants School. His date of birth was recorded as 26 1 02, with his father's name being Edwin of 43 Hazlebury Rd, Within months, on 6^th Dec 07, he was removed from school. That is just 81 days from the start date to the end date, end date included.

Start and finish before Albert was born.

Poverty struck

Sometime after 1908, according to a newspaper clipping, Edwin Page, a painter, was summoned by his wife, Florence Gertrude Page, living at Harwood Road, Fulham, who sought a separation on the ground of desertion. He had left his family, and joined a circus with another woman. The magistrate granted her a separation, and fixed the allowance to be paid by the husband at 10s. a week.

The desertion led to difficult circumstances for the family, and despite the award of 10 shillings, or half of one pound, if it was paid. They were very poor and three of the children are recorded as going the 'the poor school', West London District School, also known as Ashford School, in Ashford, Middlesex. A residential institution, but not the nearby borstal. Albert, the youngest did not attend.

Alice and Jack were admitted together, with Edwin a month or so later. They were all discharged separately, with Alice, the only girl, being the earliest. The two boys were discharged after appearing in the 1911 Census as residents. Their mother was recorded as living at 113 Harwood Road Fulham, their contact address. Apparently not abandoned, just too poor to feed and look after them.

Subsequentially, Florence remarried, to a George Waters on Jan 1916, in Kensington, London, England.

The Page family lived in a multi-occupancy house at 49 Benledi Street. In the vicinity of the East India Docks, in the Parish of All Hallows, Bromley, Middlesex.

The link to this census page, considering other known information, is somewhat tenuous, but for, sharing the address is a Frederick Duggen, Single, male 19 years of age, recorded as a relative to the head of the house, William Page. Expected would have been Edwin / Edward Page.

Extract of 1911 Census, about 4-5 years after Frederick was born.

The date of the 1911 Census was 2 April 1911, so his age would have been 5 years 1 months 27 days. Recorded as 4 year in the census record. However, ages were often somewhat flexible on Census forms.

Fredrick is recorded as being born in the London Hospital, whilst the rest of the children are Poplar, London, possibly born at home.

The London Hospital officially became The Royal London Hospital on September 24, 1990. This was when Queen Elizabeth II granted the hospital the royal title in recognition of its 250th anniversary. The hospital was originally established as the London Infirmary in 1740. It changed its name to The London Hospital in 1748.

One child, James Page is recorded as having died at the date of the census, at 3 months. By the order of the list, he was presumably born before Alice in 1902 but after the 1901 Census.

Willis Street is only about 600 yards away from the 1901 residence in Bedledi Street. Still back to back properties, but with slightly bigger back yards.

The information is reasonably consistent across the 1911 and 1901 Census records. Flora in 1901 and Florence 1911 are assumed to be interchangeable.

This appears to be the same family as previous, still at 73 Willis Street.

Other information suggests that Florence Page died in 1913 and therefore could not be included in the 1921 Census.

WEST LONDON

OFF TO THE "WILD WEST."

Edwin Page, a painter, was summoned by his wife, Florence Gertrude Page, living at Harwood road, Fulham, who sought a separation on the ground of desertion.

Mr. Pierron (Pierron and Ellis) supported the summons, and stated that defendant had treated his wife abominably. He made the acquaintance of a woman named Nora M Naughton in 1908, and she had a travelling circus called the "Wild West Show." She persuaded him and his wife to go round the country with the show, and then in the course of the tour he went off with the woman and betook himself to Canada. In June of this year he was arrested on a warrant issued by the guardians in consequence of the children having been taken to the workhouse, and was sentenced to three months' hard labour. The cost to the ratepayers, added Mr. Pierron, of keeping the children had amounted to £130.

Evidence was given by Mrs. Page, who said that the show was at Chinnor, Bucks, when her husband and the woman M Naughton went off at half-past six one morning.

The defendant said that he did not go off to live with the other woman, and, in fact, she offered both his wife and himself to go to Canada with her.

The magistrate granted her a separation, and fixed the allowance to be paid by the husband at 10s. a week.

From the Ashford School records, of the family of interest, only Edwin Page and Jack Page were still at the School at the time of the 1911 Census. Alice was discharged on 11^th Dec 1909, whilst the boys were discharged on 16^thNov 1912 and 20^th Oct 1911 respectively.
