Bernard Gribble: Mayflower Pilgrim Fathers boarding the Mayflower
Bernard Gribble: Mayflower Pilgrim Fathers boarding the Mayflower, painting by Bernard Gribble.

Joan Hurst and extended family are part of the Pilgrim Fathers

The extended family of Joan (Hurst) (Rogers) Tilley cross the Atlantic and set up a new colony.

I have not yet established a direct family tie to Joan Hurst but is part of the One Name Study of the HURST surname and it's derivatives.

Joan's details can be found here. Joan Hurst as a name cannot be seen in the list of passengers who travelled to the New World on the Mayflower in 1620.

Joan Hurst was born in 1567/8 and baptised on 13 March 1567/8 in Henlow, Bedfordshire, her father, William, was 37, and her mother, Rose, was 33. She married Thomas Matthew Rogers on 18 June 1593 in Henlow, and they had one daughter together, Joan Rogers, who was born on 26 May 1594 in Henlow. Thomas Matthew Rogers was born on 19 December 1571 in Henlow, Bedfordshire. Unfortunately Thomas died as a young father in 1595 in Henlow, Bedfordshire, at the age of 24.

Joan Rogers nee Hurst then married John Tilly on 20 Sep 1596 in Henlow, Bedfordshire, a year after her previous husband had died.

Joan and John Tilly had five children together, all born in Henlow, their hometown

She died on 11 January 1621 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA, at the age of 53, and was buried there.
