Biddlecombe families of Ashurst

Biddlecombe families of Ashurst, Hampshire

Including the nearby Colbury and Hounsdown, all part of the New Forest

Three small hamlets in the parish of Eling, in the County of Hampshire, which was sometimes known as Southampton.

This section contains a collection of people associated with the area together with the associated 'locations and  'Records and Other'

This is part of a series of articles about the Families of Biddlecombe and variations of that name. The introduction to the series is Families of Biddlecombe and variations of that name - START. If you have not visited the introduction yet might I suggest that you do so.

Including Colbury, Hounsdown, and Langley Manor, all in the Parish of Eling, all in the New Forest.

OS 6 Map AshurstOS 6 Map Ashurst - Hampshire & Isle of Wight Sheet LXIV.SE Revised: 1895, Published: 1898

From the above OS Map Ashurst is a small settlement. Nearby are the New Forest Union Workhouse (1836), and Lyndhurst Road Station, (Opened on 1 June 1847 by the Southampton and Dorchester Railway, then absorbed by the London and South Western Railway,)

OS 6 Map Sheet Colbury

Sheet view of the above map. The area clearly shown as Colbury. The village of Eling in the top right corner.

Follow the link to see how, and when the Ancient Parish of Eling was split in three, with Ashurst, Colbury, and Hounsdown, all in the Parish of, well, still Eling, but much smaller. North Eling was created in 1837 and Marchwood in 1846.

Extent of Biddlecombe Surname, and variations.

This is part of the process of trying to establish if there are other Biddlecome families in the area, which could confuse matters, and their number and distribution. By seeing families in the Baptism Register can help eliminate alternative options for residents in Hampshire, of the Church of England. Obliviously this method excludes families without children. It also does not take into account other variables such as change of location. Similar for Marriage Register, except, if I understand correctly, even non-Conformists had to be married in Church of England churches.

It is just indicative, but helpful.

Sorry, the buttons don't work here. If you find this information useful you can find more about the registers at the Hampshire Genealogical Society shop.

Filtered for Surname, Biddle???

These settings only produced a list of 4 baptisms, in the list below. Apparently to two or three families, depending upon if Frances is a female, a different person to Francis, or a spelling mistake. Perhaps a widow of Francis or Morris.

The dates of baptisms are all over an eight year period, near the end of the Index period.

It should be noted that for a lot of Parishes, the end date of 1659, is before or close to the first date of Parish records still in existence. So, the absence of a return for a parish, does not necessarily mean that there were no families of that name in that Parish, just none in the register.

14 Jan 1645/6 S Richard Francis Biddlecome Eling
20 Oct 1650 D Bridget Frances Biddlecome Eling

From the Parent Forename, none of the parents were married in the Parish of Eling before the dates of the Baptisms, therefore probably married elsewhere and moved to the Parish of Eling after marriage.

I have searched the images of the Eling Parish Register for this period and found the records for each of the four baptisms above. I have added the baptised, assumed children with approximately the same year of birth as the year of baptism, to my Hurst Family Tree. I have also added the parents as, Francis, Morris, and Frances. Three families across four baptisms. In those records, there was no further information regarding the place other that the Parish of Eling.

This is to try to establish if there were other Baptisms to the same parent, in any other Hampshire Parish.

Ringwood is the clear centre of population of Biddlecombe in this period.

Below, a grouping of the data by Parish and then Parent Surname, Forename to approximate family groups.

It would appear that some are the same family, but with varying spelling or abbreviations.

Apologies that this is slightly out of focus, it has had to be shrunk and re-expanded to get on this page.

Variations of surnames.

HGS Bap 1537 1659 All Biddle All Excell PT C

Biddle returns with a search of Biddle??? or more precisely, Biddle*, but is not likely to be significant as a variation of Biddlecombe. I chose Biddle* as the search to ensure capturing as many relevant variations as possible including misspellings from 'c' onwards.

Parish Registers

Moving on from an overview of the Register to a detailed look at the contents, on a journey of discovery for Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, and perhaps a few other things on the way. Hoping to find validation regarding people in my Ancestry Family Tree, and perhaps some additional information / people.

List of Rectors & Vicars

A spectacular find. Click on image to go to source.

Eling

These lists are so helpful. In the past I would look through the Parish Register for information to create a list, or go to some of the sources at the top of the image. This is so much easier, just look the parish up, and there is the list. I recognise some of the names from the Marriage Certificates.
