John James was baptised on 21 Oct 1810 at All Saints Church, Southampton, with his parents recorded as William Brookman and Sarah Brookman.

Trace the family with the ten year Census

The Census is a good place to start building up an image of a family. Over the decades you can see it expand and then contract as the children leave home. The groups of people and the additional information about them, such as occupation and place of birth can help identify families with greater confidence than by names and ages alone. This additional information can help with changes of spelling and of location, resolving reluctance. Sometimes place of birth appears to change, but it is often in the same area, just a different granularity. It is also helpful to remember that until the 1911 Census, it is all in the hand of the enumerator. What he heard, and what he wrote down, and some were more conciencipus than others. Particularly, with addresses. Some just the area, others each household with a specific address, sometime still identifiable today. Then there is the legibility of the writing and the transcribers skill. It is still a good place to start.

1841 Census

John is shown living in Castle Square, just a four minute walk from the Bargate, within the old town walls. Near to the location of the medieval castle, as the address suggests.

As at 2020 this address is in the Parish: St Michael the Archangel, Southampton whereas according to the 1841 census it was located in the parish of All Saints, Southampton. All Saints' Church was located on the corner of the High Street and East Street, just halfway to the Bargate. The church of St Michael the Archangel was also 2 minutes walk away. It was not until 1836 that centuries of neglect were halted, so in 1841 it could have presented as an attractive and welcoming church. The parish covered the south-west quadrant of the walled town south of the castle but excluding St. John's parish. Click here for an old map of the Castle and Town Walls.

John's occupation is that of a Cooper.

He is living at the same address with Ann, female aged 26, together with children William, Mary, John, and David, aged 7, 5, 3, and 1 respectively. The conjecture for this could be that they were having one child every two years and that John and Ann may have married about 1833. Which would have made Ann 18 and John 22.

According to Ancestry records;

1851 Census

Civil Parish, Southampton St Michael.

John's occupation is again stated as a Cooper. His age is now recorded as 40. The address is Castle Lane this time. This could either indicate that the family moved from Castle Square to Castle Lane,or perhaps Castle Lane was a new creation from Castle Square. However, this Southampton map from 1846 shows both Castle Square and Castle Lane. It could be part of the vagaries of the Enumerators route recording. He travelled from Albion Place, and Albion Terrace through the Castle Wall, via the Orphans Asylum, and Lansdowne House on to Castle Square, and Castle Place before moving on to Lansdowne Hill. Lansdowne House is still standing and is in Castle Lane. John's entry is five buildings on from Lansdowne House. I think the conclusion is that he and his family were in the same abode in 1841 and 1851, in Castle Lane. I have not yet honed it down to which building. Was Cerberus House, Castle Lane, Southampton the orphan's asylum mentioned in the 1851 census? Matron, Charlotte Bellenger, aged 25, with eleven 8 to 17 year old girls, or perhaps ten 8 to 13, with the 17 year old being a helper.

He is living at the same address with Ann, female aged 38, (was 26 in 1841) together with the same children as 1841, William, Mary, John, and David, now aged 17, 15, 13, and 10 respectively. All plus ten years apart from David who dropped one year. Additional children for 1851 census are all daughters. Sarah, Lannol, Elizabeth, and Emily, aged 8, 5, 2, and 3 months respectively.

In the 1841 census Ann is stated as being born in the Same County, Yes/No, i.e. Hampshire, whereas with more information required in 1851, she tells the enumerator that her place of birth is Sandhurst, Berkshire.

1853 Post Office Directory of the Borough of Southampton and Neighbourhood

The Post Office Directory of 1853 included 17 Coopers, including Brookman, John of Castle Lane. (Castle Lane is a continuation of Castle Square)

1861 Census

This time John had moved. They were now living in Threefield Lane. On the eastern edge of the town according to the 1846 map, outside the Town Walls. However, by the 1870 Southampton map, the railway had arrived in 1840 and the infill area was full of new development. Threefield Lane is about half a mile from Castle Lane, walking route, shorter by crow, and longer by car.

Threefield Lane is categorized as being in the Parish of St Mary according to the Census, however, from the below map, it is currently in the parish of St Michael.

John has aged by 10 years in the 10 years since the last Census and is now recorded as 50.

John's wife used her name Rose A in the 1861 Census whereas previously she had used just Ann. Her full name from the marriage record was Rose Ann Campbell, so this is not inconsistent. Her age is recorded as 47. (26, 38, 47).

Her place of birth is also subject to further focus, as Blackwater, Berks. The previously recorded Sandhurst is nearby and slightly larger, so again, not inconsistent.

Their eldest child, William, presumably named after John's father, is still living at home, and he has joined the family business, as a Cooper. He is now 27 and recorded as unmarried.

The other children on the 1841 Census, Mary, John, and David, who would now be aged 25, 23, and 20 respectively, have not unexpectedly, left home, or at least are not at home on the day of the Census,

Of the children first appearing on the 1851 Census, all daughters. Sarah, Lannol, Elizabeth, and Emily, now aged 18, 15, 12, and 10 years respectively, only Sarah is at home on that day, recorded with an occupation of servant at home. Surprised that these three are not at home. Janet (Brockman) Brookman, aged 15 is the Sister in Law of Martin Gunning, living at Dukes Road, Portswood, Southampton. Janet is described as a House Maid.

Martin is married to Mary, aged 27 and 25. Martin is a Carpenter Joiner and Mary a Dressmaker. They have a son, William Gunning aged 2, born in Southampton, Hampshire. Martin has stated his place of birth as being Upper Lychet, (Lytchett) Dorset. From other sources Martin Henry Gunning married Mary Catherine Brookman in Q1 1857 in Southampton, Hampshire. This would coincide with Janet being Martin's Sister in Law. However, Janet is not a name previously associated with the family. From the ages, are Lannol (Lonnot) and Janet the same person, both aged 15?

There is an Elizabeth Brookman, aged 12, working as a servant, Maid of all work, at York House, Hill Lane, Four Posts, Millbrook. The head of the house was Raddon Crabb, a cabinet maker. Elizabeth is recorded as having been born in St Michael, Southampton. The name, age, match, and Elizabeth Jane was baptised in St Michael. Martin, the husband of Mary is a Carpenter Joiner, could this be another circumstantial link? There is also an Elizabeth Maria from Southampton born at about the same time. Unfortunatly, there is also a death record for an Elizabeth Maria Brookman in 1849, the same year she was baptised.

York House may be the same as York Lodge or York Villa. Both on Hill Lane, in the hamlet of Hill, north of Four Posts. Both are also individually identified on my 'The Parish of Millbrook Tithe Apportionment Google Earth Project', very near to the boundary with Southampton. Freemantle, Shirley, and Millbrook are now all incorporated into Southampton.

Alice, Jemima, and Margarett are the new children for the 1861 Census. Aged 7, 3, and 1 respectively. All the children are listed as being born in St Mary, Southampton. It is possible, looking at the previous pattern of a child every two years, that there was a child born in about 1856, who would have been aged 5 at the Census. There is no evidence for this at the moment, just the pattern.

John and Rose Ann had according to the Census in 1841, 1851, and 1861, have had eleven children, by the time she was 47.

1871 Census

John and his family are still living in Threefield Lane, number 6, and he is still working as a Cooper. He is now 60 years old.

Ann is now 57 and there are no additional children in the ten year Census period. Blackwater, Berks, is again stated as her place of birth.

William is still unmarried, living at home, as a Cooper.

Sarah has left, but Emily has returned, now aged 20, with a stated occupation of General Servant, (out of employ). Perhaps that is why she is back with her parents. The youngest child is called Ellen, and is stated as being 11 years old and a scholar. The ages would suggest the the 1861 Census Margarett and the 1871 Ellen are one in the same person.

Mary Catherine Gunning, 36 and her husband Martin Henry Gunning 38 had moved from Dukes Road, Portswood, Southampton, to Devons Road, Bromley, Tower Hamlets, London, England for the 1871 Census. Martin is a Joiner and Mary a Dressmaker.

Janet C Winkworth, aged 25, is living at 27 Cambridge Street, St Mary, Southampton with her daughter, Jessie A Winkworth, aged 1. Also at the same address are her sisters, Alice H Brookman, 17, Dressmaker, and Jemima Brookman, 13, Scholar. Alice and Jemima match the 1861 Census details.

Alice H Brookman is living with her sister as above, at 27 Cambridge Street.

Jemima Brookman is also living with her sister as above, at 27 Cambridge Street.

Margarett Ellen Brookman, as above, living at 6 Threefield Road.

David George Brookman who would now be 30, could possibly be a George Brokman living at 4 Union Place, St Mary, Southampton, Hampshire, with his wife Mary, 35, and daughter Emily, 3. Mary is recorded as being born in Marylebone, Middlesex, England. This assumption has not yet been verified. Whilst George Brookman is living at 4 Union Place in the 1881 Census, which may reinforce George being David George, there are also Marrage records of George Brookman aged 23 to Mary Parish, at Holy Trinity, Southampton, in 1867. This equates to George Brookman being born in 1844, instead of 1840. Also, George Brookman father is stated as being George Brookman, not the John James Brookman we would expect.

1881 Census

John is no longer with us by the 1881 Census having passed away in 1879.

William is still living a 6 Threefield Lane, working as a Cooper, and is now the unmarried head of the household, aged 47.

Two of his sisters are living with him, Jemima aged 23, and Ellen aged 21. (Margarett). Jemima is a Dressmaker and Ellen a General Servant.

Jessie Winkworth is also living with them, described as William's niece, aged 11 and a scholar.

Mary Gunning, 46, and her husband Martin H Gunning,48, had moved again, and were now to be found in 15 Browns Rd, West Ham, London. He was recorded as being a Carpenter together with his son William, unmarried and aged 23. The other children are all recorded as scholars. The surname Gunning has been transcribed as Guming throughout.

Robert Guming Son 13 1868 Male Scholar Bromley Middlesex England
George Guming Son 11 1870 Male Scholar Bromley Middlesex England
Jessie Guming Daughter 8 1873 Female Scholar Bromley Middlesex England
Flora Guming Daughter 7 1874 Female Scholar Stratford Essex.

The latters place of birth suggests that the family had moved to West Ham by 1874.

Sarah Ann married Charles Henry Furzey from Popular, London in January 1865 at Southampton, Hampshire. The surname Furzey appears to be particularly difficult as there are several variations over the years. In the 1881 Census the family is living at 18 Dock Street, St Mary, Southampton, under the recorded surname of Fierzey. Charles H, 41, is a General Labourer, and Annie Fierzey (Sarah Ann) is aged 39. They have three children living with them, Kate Jeanette, 9, Alice Florence, 6 and Charles David, 2. All of the children were born in Southampton and both of the girls go to school.

Janet E Winkworth, aged 35, was living with her family at 42 Cruikshank Rd, Forest Gate, West Ham, Essex, England. Her daughter Jessie was living with Janet's brother William, above, and was still at school. Janet's husband Joseph S. Winkworth, aged 37, is recorded as being a Cook, with the annotation ND, which may mean Non-Domestic, i.e. not a domestic servant in a household. The children are living at home are;

Ernest S. Winkworth, Son 9 Male Scholar Born Southampton Hampshire England
Harry J. Winkworth, Son 6 Male Scholar Born, Hatfield Hertfordshire England
Rosena J. Winkworth, Daughter 5 Female Scholar Born, Stratford Essex England
Edward J. Winkworth, Son 3 Male None Born, Stratford Essex England

Elizabeth Brookman. Not currently found within this year's Census.

Emily Brookman married John Nicholson in April 1871 in Southampton. Presumably shortly after the Census in which she was recorded as being with her parents. Assumed from the birth of their children that they had moved from Southampton to Mile End between 1872 and 1874. In the 1881 Census they were residing at High Road Chadwell. Her husband John is recorded as being a Carpenter aged 33, born in Leeds, Yorkshire. They have two daughters, Ada, 9 and Emily, 7.

Alice Brookman. Not currently found within this year's Census

Jemima Brookman is living with her brother, William as above, at 6 Threefield Lane.

Margarett Brookman, known as Ellen in this Census, is also living with her brother, William, as above, at 6 Threefield Lane.

A general migration appears to have occurred in this decade. Mary Gunning, 15 Browns Road, West Ham, Janet E Winkworth, 42 Cruikshank Rd, Forest Gate, West Ham,  Emily Nicholson, High Road Chadwell.

The area around Brown's Road, Plaistow, West Ham has been redeveloped with the nearest current road being Pelly Road to the East and East Road to the West. Brown's Road joined the two, at the approximate level of Crescent Road. Brown's Road is about 6 miles from High Road Chadwell, and only 1 1/miles from 42 Cruikshank Rd. Three sisters, all from Southampton, all married, to two carpenters and a cook, and living within 6 miles of each other, in North East London.

1891 Census

William is still living at 6 Threefield Lane, working as a Cooper, and is now aged 57, unmarried.  The head of the household is again Ann, aged 78, and recorded as a widow.

William's sister Ellen, aged 31, is now married, with a surname of Sumner, and is there with her son, Alfred Sumner, aged 1.

At the same address the Census records, as another family unit, Edward Collins as head of the household, aged 34, married to Jemima, aged 33. He is a Cabinet Maker and she is a Dressmaker. Jemima aged 3 in the 1861 Census would be 33 in 1891. On 27 July 1884 a Edward Nash Collins married Jemima Joanna Brookman at Southampton, Hampshire, England. (Southampton 2c 28), or somebody else on that page. Given the circumstances it seems reasonable to assume that the Edward and Jemima Collins in the Census are those people.

Edward and Jemima had three daughters at the time of the 1891 Census, Rose, Beatrice, and Jessie, aged 6, 4, and 2 respectively. All born in Southampton, Hants.

Sadly, Jemima did not make it to the next Census as she died of cancer on 1 Oct 1894 at Southampton Hampshire, England.

Mary Gunning, who would have been 56 at the 1891 Census, but has not yet been found, either on her own or with her family. Mary died on  18 Dec 1891 at Mile End Old Town. Martin Henry Gunning was recorded in the Baptist register as being on 9 Feb 1834 at Lytchett Matravers, Dorset, England and his death is recorded on Q2 1882 at West Ham, Essex, England. Just one year after the last Census.

Sarah Ann now Annie Furzey aged 48 is at the 1891 Census a widow. From other sources her husband, Charles Henry Furzey, died in Q3 1885 at Southampton, Hampshire. Annie had become a Charwoman and was living at 10 Edward Street, near Coleman Street, with her children, Alice Furzey, Daughter 16, Charles Furzey, Son 12, Edward Furzey, Son, 9, Hannah Furzey, Daughter 6 and her Brother in Law, James Collins aged 41. Kate Jeanette who would be 19, was not on the list of occupants. Edward Street was very close to the Workhouse, Albion Brewery, and St Mary's Church.

James Collins was the brother of Edward Nash Collins, husband of Jemima Brookman, sister of Annie Furzey, hence Brother in Law. He is a widower aged 41, and a Seaman, according to the record.

Incidentally, living next door, at 11 Edward Street, was Charles Henry Kash, Head 39.Perhaps Kash was wrongly transcribed, and should be Nash. His wife, Ann Elizth Kash, 44, born in Whiteparish Wiltshire.
Charles Hy Jas Kash, Son 14, William Kash, Son 12, and Elizabeth Ada Kash, Daughter 10 all lived with Charles Henry Kash.

Janet Winkworth, aged 45, had moved from 42 to 38 Cruikshank Rd, Forest Gate, West Ham, in the intervening ten years between Census. Joseph Winkworth, aged 47, does not have a recorded occupation, but is now shown as being Blind. That would be very difficult for a cook, and indeed at that time for any form of gainful employment.

Harry Winkworth Son Male 16 Born, St Albans Hertfordshire England
Rosetta Winkworth Daughter Female 15 Born, Stratford Essex England
Edward Winkworth Son Male 13 Born, Stratford Essex England
Daisy Winkworth Daughter Female 4 Born, Stratford Essex England

With the new addition being Daisy aged 4, and the leaver at the other end of the list being Ernest, now aged 19.

According to the Census they had taken in a lodger. Perhaps to help with the bills.

A family called Perry was in occupation at their old home of 42 Cruikshank Rd.

Elizabeth Brookman. Not currently found within this year's Census.

Emily Nicholson (nee Brookman), aged 40, and her carpenter husband John Nicholson, aged 43, were living at 4 Cowell Road, Peckham, Camberwell, London, England at the date of the 1891 Census. That is South of the River, about 14 miles from the last Census address. The details of where born remain as before. Only one daughter is with them at the time, Emilly E, 17, a domestic servant. The record clearly states Emily E but I am taking that as an Enumerators anomally from Emily Hellen. Ellen and Hellen, are very similar in a Southampton accent.

Alice Brookman. Not currently found within this year's Census.

Jemima Collins nee Brookman, see above.

Margarett Ellen Brookman, now married with surname Sumner, as above, living at 6 Threefield Lane.

1901 Census

William is still living at 6 Threefield Lane, working as a Cooper, at home, and is now aged 69, single. He is again head of the household.

His mother, Ann, who would be aged 88, is not recorded at the residence. Her death is recorded elsewhere as being on 13 March 1894 at Southampton, Hampshire, England

William's sister Ellen, aged 41, is still shown as married, with a surname of Sumner, but her husband is still not listed here. Ellen is there with her son, Alfred Sumner, aged 11, together with additional children for this Census, William, 9 and Rose, 3.

At the residence, there is also a boarder listed. William Early, single, aged 34, born in Everton, Hampshire. His occupation is Coal Porter.

Edward Nash Collins Alice Florence Furzey married Edward Nash Collins on 03 June 1895 at Southampton, Hampshire. Edward Nash Collins had previously been married to Jemima Brookman who had died of cancer on 1 Oct 1894. If you recall Jemima Brookman was the sister to Sarah Ann Brookman now Annie Furzey, and the mother of Alice Florence Furzey.

Edward Collins was living at 13 Chapel Street, St Mary, Southampton at the time of the 1901 Census with his wife of six years, Alice, aged 27. Alice at this time had two children, Elsie Marion Collins, aged 5 and Letitia Annie Collins, aged 3. Two of Edward's and Jemima's children were also there, Beatrice, 14, and Maud, 9. Elizabeth Emma Rose Collins, known as Rose Collins aged 17, was a domestic servant at 20 Portland Terrace, which appears to be a boarding house or hotel, with Mary Ann Fisher as the head, as a Housekeeper. Laura Jessie Leah Collins was aged 12 but has not yet been found in the 1901 Census.

Photo of Edward Nash Collins in 1925. More photos of this part of the family at the end of this Article.

Janet Winkworth, aged 55 is by the 1901 Census, a widow. Living at 21 Ramsay Rd, Cann Hall, Leytonstone, London, which despite the apparent change of area, is just 5 minutes walk away from the previous address of 38 Cruikshank Rd. She has one of the previously listed children living with her. Was Daisy Winkworth Daughter Female 4 Born, Stratford Essex England, but now Margaret Winkworth, 14. (Christened Margaret Daisy Winkworth). The new addition is Ruth aged 10. From elsewhere Ruth was baptised on 8 November 1891. The Census that year was held on 5 April.

Elizabeth Brookman. Not currently found within this year's Census.

Emily Nicholson (nee Brookman), aged 50, was a widow my the time of the 1891 Census. She was still in Peckham or East Dulwich, depending on the boundaries, at 251 Lordship Lane, a mere 2 minute walk away. Her son in Law is the head of the household. Her daughter Emily Helen married Henry George Jenkinson on 18 August 1894 in East Dulwich (other sources). According to the Census he was an insurance messenger aged 31, born in Clerkenwell, North of the River. According to the marriage certificate, Henry George was living at 42 Darrell Road whilst Emily Helen was living at 4 Cowell Road, less than 10 minutes walk between them. Her father, John Nicholson, is not stated as being deceased on the Marriage Certificate, so probably died between 1894 and  1901.

Alice Brookman. Not currently found within this year's Census

Jemima Collins nee Brookman, unfortunatly passed away of cancer aged 37, on or around 1 Oct 1894 in Southampton, Hampshire, England

Ellen Sumner nee Brookman, is living with her brother, as above, at 6 Threefield Lane.

1911 Census

Ellen was living in 21 Johnston Street, Southampton at the time of the 1911 Census, as Housekeeper to William Early. William Early was a boarder at 6 Threefield Lane in the 1901 Census. Ellen's children Alfred, William, and Rose, aged 21, 19, and 13 are still with her, all single. Alfred is working as a Coster (Costermonger, street seller of fruits and vegetables, generally from a barrow, hand cart, or horse drawn cart). William is a Dock Labourer.

At the same address, Elizabeth Rickson, aged 62, is listed as a married relative, born in Southampton, Hampshire.

Johnston Street still exists but has been redeveloped. It is surrounded on three sides by Hoglands, Houndwell, and Palmerston Parks.

Also living at Johnston Street, but at number 30, is Annie Furzey. She is living on her own, and has not remarried since being widowed in 1885, some 26 years previously. Her occupation is recorded as none. Annie has had five children born alive, but unfortunately two of those had died by the 1911 Census. Charles David Furzey in 1901 aged 22, and Edward John Furzey, also 22.

Janet Winkworth, aged 65, has made a significant move of about 7 miles across London, to 83 Isledon Road, Finsbury Park, London, according to the 1911 Census. Rosetta, Daisy, and Ruth are with her, aged 35, 24, and 19. All born at Stratford Essex. They appear to be in the clothes industry with occupations stated as Blouse Designer, Blouse Cutter, and Blouse Machinist. They are all described as Worker, somebody working for an Employer, not working for themselves. Grandchildren are also listed at the residence. Janet is recorded as having been married for 43 years and as having had 8 children born alive, of which 6 are still living in 1911.

There is also an entry in the 1913 register of electors for a Janet Winkworth at 5 Briston Grove, Crouch End, under two miles away from the 1911 Census address of 83 Isledon Rd. Both are Finsbury Park. However, unlike the Census where there were other collaborating factors, not least of which were the daughters, so this is just a maybe.

Elizabeth Brookman. Not currently found within this year's Census.

Emily Nicholson (nee Brookman), aged 60, was still living with her daughter, Emily Helen, and her husband Henry George Jenkinson at 307 Crystal Palace Rd, East Dulwich, Camberwell, London. They had their two daughters and one son living with them, as well as his Mother in Law.

Alice Brookman. Not currently found within this year's Census

Jemima Collins nee Brookman, unfortunatly passed away of cancer aged 37, on or around 1 Oct 1894 in Southampton, Hampshire, England

Ellen Sumner nee Brookman, is living with her brother, as above, at 21 Johnston Street.

England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975

The progressive Census data provides some insight into the growth and dispersion of the family unit. Approximate age, addresses, occupations, where born, and relationships. Not all of which is sacrosanct information as it relies on the person knowing the information, then telling the enumerator truthfully, and the enumerator writing down what he heard, correctly. We already have an instance of that here where Lannol Brookman only appears in the  1851 Census. I am not sure how that could be misheard from Janet.

So, having gathered a family together using the Census, can we establish further facts, to substantiate the Census. Registration of births centrally commenced in 1837 and that provides some information about a persons name and the yaer and quarter of the registration of there birth, but without family association. Church christenings sometimes provide date of birth, but always provide the name of the church, the date of the baptism and the parents names. Baptisms don't always happen imediatly after birth, and are sometimes delayed until there is an appropriate day off, such as Christmas, or two people together.

Part of the research into John James Brookman and his family is to review the possibility of there being similarly named couples being around in the same general location and in the same timeframe. The below searches of the Hampshire Genealogical Society - Marriage Index seeks to establish if that condition existed. It does not however deal with the vagaries of spelling regarding surname, that is done within Ancestry.

Auntie Let wedding

The occasion of Letitia Annie Collins wedding to Percy James Ricketts in 1925.

Auntie Let on the left, with her sister Elsie Marion Collins, Auntie Elsie, in the middle and their Mother, Alice Florence Collins nee Furzey, on the right.

Collins Sisters

Well we are definitely into the realms of close relatives now. My grandmother, Nan, the youngest of the three, on the right, and both Aunts known to me. Of the two Aunts, Auntie Elsie was best known to me, in part because she lived with my Nan and her husband, Bert in her later life.

Auntie Elsie never married. She spent a lot of time working for the charity, Toc-H.

My Auntie Elsie

My parents and I visited her there when I was a child. She is the lady with her hands clasped together in the centre. I don't recal if she was the cook or the housekeeper at this time.
