      Francis Fane was the eldest surviving son and heir of Sir Thomas Fane (d. 1589) of Badsell in Kent, by his second wife Mary Neville (c. 1554–1626), sole daughter and heiress of Henry Nevill, 6th Baron Bergavenny (d. 1587) (de jure 4th Baron Bergavenny) by his wife Lady Frances Manners.

      Badsell Manor belonged to direct ancestors of the modern day Culpeppers, and the modern home found there in March 2000 still has a moat around it (see lower photo). It is thought to be the second oldest site of an old Culpeper home where a home still exists on the site today. Sir Thomas Culpeper6 will of 1428: "Touching the manor of Badeselle it is to remain to Walter7 my son and his heirs male, with remainder to the heirs male of myself and Joyce my wife."       In 1572 Thomas was made Sheriff of Kent and on 26 August 1573, in the reign of the protestant Queen Elizabeth, he was knighted by Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, in the presence of the Queen at Dover Castle. Now a successful man in his own right Thomas was able to arrange a very advantageous second marriage. This time his bride was the twenty year old Mary Neville the daughter of Henry Neville 6th Lord Abergavenny of Mereworth and Frances Manners. Mary was Henry Neville’s only survivving child, his sole heiress. The marriage agreement, which survives to this day, is a huge manuscript written in old English. This was an important arrangement that was to bring great fortune to the Fane family. Just two years after the nuptials Lord Abergavenny died and Mary, as his sole heir, brought considerable wealth to the Fanes. It is rather ironic that Mary’s father Lord Abegavenny was instrumental in defeating the Sir Thomas Wyatt rebellion.

      In 1557 Thomas married Elizabeth Colepyr the youngest daughter of Thomas Colepepper of Bedgbury. Elizabeth was coincidentally part of the same family that was earlier linked with Badsell Manor.

DNA testing adds a whole different aspect to Genealogy

You can find relatives you did not know you had, open new branches to your tree, and create validations of people between the match and myself.

Whilst the improbable tree has lots of information yet to be validated, the tree I have created just for DNA matches and the links of ancestors between us, only has spouses that are not in some way validated.

I have started with DNA matches in Ancestry, but will eventually include MyHeritage and GEDmatch matches as well.

Family Trees can be just a list of people and how they are interrelated.

However they can contain so much more. Records, so many records.

Part of the process of assessment of a record for me, is about location. This takes me into social economic history. In the 19th century, where a lot of our records come from, life was considerably different form today. The very rich could move about the country, and indeed they would with a degree of ease that we have today, albeit on a different timescale. I recently found people on my tree that migrated to North America, and subsequently part of the family moved on to Australia, and set up home there. Shipping passenger records indicate that people from that family frequently visited their relatives both in North America and Britain, before returning to their home in Australia. That was not the lot of the masses though.
