Who was John Watts and who were his family?
There are various John Watts in the Hampshire area born in the second half of the 1700s and the first half of 1800s.
This is an attempt to sort out the various families associated with John Watts so as to establish the father and grandfather of Louisa Watts.
As the research progresses various potential family groups appear.
The result, a rearrangement of the article to aid clarity.
The article has also become too big, so I have split it into two parts. The first half is still here but only as a shell, with links back the Part A.
I have also added a ESRI Story Map to help visualize locations.
Towards the end of the Above Bar Church register there is a letter from a John Watts about the family of William and Mary Watts, image below. (Repeat from earlier text, but perhaps easier to read again together.
There is a possibility that William and Mary may me the parents of the John Watts who married Sarah Bunn. To explore that further, the next part looks at the family of William and Mary Watts nee Larmitte.
The year of the various children birth appears to match the letter including that of John Watts. Moving forward to try to establish if there are other comparable families in Hampshire, which could give rise to confusion and ambiguity.
Using various sources of data, I will search the names of each child in turn, which with the common names of the time will be quite an extensive list. Using location and parents' names I will seek to establish family groups. If none of those groups resemble the family of William and Mary Watts, it would seem to increase the probability of the John Watts and Sarah his Wife nee Bunn family group being the next generation. Add to the location and parents' names the religion and type of church could improve the probability of a link. This exercise begins at the 'The New content begins below.' heading.

This is all somewhat unlikely to be the Sarah Bunn we are looking for, but just to be through, a search for the marriage of John Watts and Sarah Coles (nee Bunn from previous marriage) did not reveal any results.

Using Ancestry to search for the marriage of a Sarah ?? who married a ?? Bunn, it did find a Sara Lancaster who married a William Bunn. William Bunn died in 1783 according to at least one Ancestry Tree. Sara Bunn (nee Lancaster) would then be a widow available to marry William Cole, a widower, in 1787.

A potential baptism record for Sarah Lancaster
Widening the search did reveal a Marriage between John Watts and Sarah Bunn, but it is at St Marylebone, Westminster, England, not Southampton, Hampshire.
No 572 John Watts of this Parish Bachelor and Sarah Bunn of the same Parish spinster were Married in this Church by Banns this Twenty ninth Day of October in the Year One Thousand and seven Hundred and Ninety eight By me ??? Lawrence Curate. This Marriage was solemnized between us John Watts, Sarah Bunn. In the Presence of John Hillock, James Bunn.
They are both recorded as of this parish, i.e. St Marylebone, Westminster, England. This is not as expected. The marriage is by Banns, so they would have been in the area for three readings before the wedding. So why were they in London for a month before getting married? I understand that they could not get married in a dissenter's church as it was not legal until 1837, but why London instead of Southampton. John Watts was a Shoemaker, at the time, going to London would be a rare event, with most people not travelling that far in their lifetime.
This is a possible marriage, but it is far from conclusive. However, the baptisms consistently refer to Sarah Bunn as John Watts wife.

Originally included as a possible John Wats, only one 't' but possibly a mis spelling, but then noticed the disconnected 'on' when transcribing. The surname is probably Watson, so not really relevant.
Confirmed by another entry as Watson, regarding John Watson's baptism on 14 June 1796.
Another Watts in the same church at Above Bar Southampton. This time the mother, (late Watts) followed by Robert Watts.
